Yard/Garden work

All around town the crabapples are coming into bloom. Some are completely covered in white, and others are only partly open.

Here is one of the "Beverly" crabapples on the edge of our meadow, chosen because of two Beverlies in our extended family.

And next is a close-up of the blossoms.

As for the "work"? Well, here is one of the paid garden workers I hire from Bella Fiori garden services. She is improving the herb garden. And many other parts of the garden are being improved also . Yesterday three people worked for about four hours on clearing the hill to lake from garlic mustard plants. Ooof! Arthritis in my knees stops me from trying to do anything on that slope!

But the biggest event of the day was the drilling of a new well for our house. Every time we had a real gully-washer of a rainstorm, our old well pit would flood, the pump would short out, and we would be without water until it was removed, dried out and re-installed.

This morning the driller came and drilled and drilled. They found water at 110 feet, but the process took until after dinner time.

View out my sewing room window.
The equipment is still standing out there at 7:00 pm, but no men are around.

Tomorrow our usual well service man is expected to install the new pump with a water-proof casing, and connect it to the house.. And fill in the old well pit.

Just one of those "joys of home ownership" that we never imagined when we first signed mortgage papers.

Garlic Mustard Removal

We did indeed go to pull garlic mustard yesterday. And here you can see the "pullers" gathering, and how wet the ground was. At least that made the plants come out of the ground pretty easily--they have a tap root, like a carrot.

The naturalist who instructed us said that the plant killed a necessary fungus or microbe in the ground which makes 90% of our native plants unable to grow nearby. That's the problem more than shading the ground. And it continues to grow and go to SEED even when pulled out of the ground, so we had to bag it all up and take it away.

Fifteen people showed up to do this work. Here is the Township Manager about to pounce on a large specimen.

And here is one more shot of the quilt I finished yesterday.

This shows the uneven circles that I free quilted in the inner border. Jusat another "liberated" look while I am learning to be more consistent. Oh, well, learning takes experience. And I think I might keep this for myself for a while.

Third Finish for April

Just finished the binding, labelling and hanging sleeve at 5:30 pm. on "Mountain Majesties in Blue". This was another idea from Bonnie Hunter, but my blocks were quite a bit smaller than hers. This measures 39" x 59". The fabrics were from a "blue" Fat Eighth exchange in February of last year. This February I finished the blocks and borders and began the quilting, but lost my energy. Today I went to work on it with a vengeance becaue I wanted one more finish this month! So I plugged away at the quilting for most of the afternoon.

Now it is time to decide if we are going to a Garlic Mustard "Pull" at our new Nature Park. It is scheduled, but it has been raining most of the day. Just stopped, but the trees will be dripping! May be a sea of mud, and we will all go home at once.
